First Nations Performance Series, program
September 10 – 20, 1992
Creative Access Description
A tabloid size newspaper with sixteen portrait oriented pages, including front and back cover, printed in black ink on a thicker newsprint. The front cover features the grunt gallery logo, a rectangular form with rough faded edges meant to evoke paintbrush strokes with the word 'grunt' in lowercase serif font formed by use of negative space in the top left corner and the series dates in the top right corner. Below is the series title in an enlarged standard sans serif font in a rainbow arc across the page. Under the arc is an illustration in Northwest Coast style of a human figure with outstretched and raised arms holding a feather in each hand. The figure's face and upper torso are bisected vertically with masculine features on the left side and feminine features on the right side. A gestating child lies in the figure's belly. To the left of the figure are the forms of a bird and a canine and to the right are the forms of another bird and a turtle. Below the illustration is a block of bold text in a standard serif font describing the series, followed by a centre aligned list of individual performances with performers' names and dates. Additional text is centred below with details on timing, admission cost, location, and contact information. At the bottom of the page are two duplicated illustrations of a landscape featuring mountains, trees, and water, bordered above and below with a thick line.
The remainder of the program features credits and acknowledgements, individual performance descriptions, advertisements, and three essays in quarter and half page layouts and including text in dozens of fonts, sizes, and treatments. Illustrations are numerous and done in a variety of styles including black and white photographs, pencil and ink drawings, abstractions, and logos. Most draw upon some recognizable Indigenous art style or iconography, none are captioned and very few are credited. Some are implicitly attached to sections of text while others are peppered throughout the program creating a dense visual experience. The advertisements begin on page five and are similarly varied in their style, most are for arts productions and businesses local to Vancouver.
