The Joy of Life

About the Program

For Carol Shumas, this is what painting is all about and this philosophy is very evident in her colourful works of social gatherings and events of years past. Marriages, quilting bees, and their joyful interactions are inherent in her work and are often reminiscent of Grandma Moses or Maud Lewis. They are alive with people and things, at once detailed and colourful yet somehow simple and domestic. Self-taught, Shumas has been painting for seven years. Before this, she worked mainly in needlepoint and embroidery though she eventually found the medium too "flat. Influenced by Henri Rousseau, her paintings are detailed and colourful, yet simple and domestic.
