About the Program

Suzo Hickey's Let Me Go Down in the Mud is a series of paintings that explores the intersection of lesbian motherhood, marginalization, aging, and popular culture. The core of the work is her own experience as the lesbian mother of teenagers. The series goes on to examine related concerns—sickness and aging among them—that are raised as she is forced to accept her age in a culture that calls women old by the time they're 30. The figurative acrylic paintings incorporate humorous and conversational text.
