Life/Live: La scéne artistique au Royaume-Uni 1996, de nouvelles aventures = The UK Art Scene 1996, New Adventures [Book 2]

1996

book cover
This publication, in two volumes, accompanies an exhibition organized by Laurence Bossé and Hans Ulrich Obrist at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris from October 5, 1996 to January 5, 1997. This second volume is entirely dedicated to Artist-Run Spaces in the UK. This type of exhibition, distribution, and production space is very prolific in the United Kingdom and this volume reflects this well. It contains detailed information on 49 centres: presentation texts, photographs, lists of exhibitions and events, contact information and internet addresses, as well as theoretical texts on artist-run centres. In the context of an exhibition with a "national" or at least "territorial" theme, these files on exhibition sites are very enriching. It is obvious that the artistic production of a country is strongly influenced by the nature of the production and distribution structures found there. In the post-Thatcherist United Kingdom, the small self-managed exhibition centres were able, thanks to their light and flexible structure, to resist a sometimes unsympathetic social and cultural climate. The organizers of Life/Live had also invited 8 of these artist-run centres to each produce a small exhibition, presenting the artists of their choice.
