Tactile Co-Learning Engagement 2023-2024

December 1, 2023 – February 5, 2024
Educational, Residency, Conversation, Multi Media Presentation

About the Program

The 2023-2024 Tactile Co-Learning Engagement continued grunt gallery’s commitment to exploring non-visual and tactile responses to contemporary art. Evolving from the inaugural 2022 Tactile Residency, this year’s program intentionally shifted away from the term “residency” to better reflect its co-learning focus. This change acknowledges grunt gallery’s lack of production or maker spaces and emphasizes the mutual exchange of knowledge between participating artists and grunt staff.

For this year’s engagement, we were delighted to work with Monique Francis, an artist whose tactile weaving and paper-spinning processes encouraged us to consider the physicality of art-making and its relationship to access. Over six weeks, Monique shared her practice with the grunt team, inspiring discussions around how touch and texture can foster deeper connections in spaces traditionally dominated by visual engagement.

In January 2024, grunt gallery hosted a closed conversation, the second in the non-visual series, facilitated and led by Georgina Kleege, around navigating the visual arts world non-visually. Invited participants from the Blind, Non-Visual, partially sighted, and low-vision communities gathered to discuss and edited transcripts were provided to the participants.

We continue to learn and work to support the growth of local Disabled and Blind, DeafBlind, Low Vision, and Partially Sighted artists and community members in an inclusive and supportive way.
