Âsowaha
v. to cross over
Nêhiyaw (Cree)

A fording place in the river,
a crossing place,
a site that unites and divides.
The paradox of identity containing its own opposites.

And we chase our tails like young pups,
circling frantically,
trying to unite all the voices,
to make the circle whole.

But we are the river,
the crossings continue throughout,
through the blood and the bone,
voice calling from each side.
