About the Program

Material World was a two-person show involving organic sculptural works created in moss and bronze-cast materials by Kathy Pick and Gillian Collyer. Pick is a West Coast artist specializing in natural fibres and materials. Her moss balls range from one foot to five feet in diameter. By creating an impossible landscape, she intends to transform our perception of natural materials and space. Moss is a tranquil, resting, thinking material blanketing the earth; it embodies a silence, a time for quiet contemplation. Moss balls inspire visions of landscape, our personal position in nature and a state of spiritual awareness in their minimalism. Nova Scotian artist Collyer has been working extensively on a series of works around dollies and bronze casting, transforming each of her dollies into an "iron flower." The work continues her investigation into the construction of gendered identity by creating hybridized objects that enact a gender reversal and open up a space where existing notions about gender can be examined.
