About the Program

Quirky and humorous enough to make you laugh out loud, the works in Marianne Corless' Further —portraits, flags, and carpet constructed out of recycled animal pelts, recycled blankets, and human hair—also have their serious side. Buried in the soft seduction of the material, layers of meaning reside like mites. It is not only the images—portraits of European monarchy—but also the medium itself which calls to mind empire, colonialism, class privilege, a history of exploitation, and fractured race relations. Corless, through balancing politics with humour, symbolizes the historical origins and identity of Canada, and expects the viewer to experience a conflict of delight and revulsion.
