Elements of Tradition

About the Program

Two cultures, two artist, two thoughts—Elements of Tradition is an exhibition that focuses on conceptual ideas around traditional Indigenous themes within contemporary materials. Both artists apply the use of traditional First Nations organic material in celebration of their Indigenous ancestry as well as use the duality of metals and found objects to reference the non-Indigenous aspects of their cultural background. It is at this point that the artists diverge in their artwork. Kevin McKenzie has taken a more political direction, concentrating on icons of industry within contemporary culture in contrast to Barb Marchand, who chooses to discuss the ties of Aboriginal spiritualism and creative process.
