About the Program

Ontario-based artist Susan Detwiler says of her work: The act of collecting, dissecting, and recombining various objects reflects on the process of genetic engineering, grafting, and natural evolution itself. The merging of flora and fauna, or predator and prey signals mutations which appear both familiar and strange. As one form slips over into another, taking with it the residue of past experience, an exchange occurs which both preserves and creates anew, allowing for an unlimited number of possibilities. Whether born of necessity or circumstances, these unusual combinations underscore the persistence of all things which live. Questions regarding the possibility of inert material to reanimate challenge our perceptions of the boundary between life and death, and a world which seems to be infinite.
