About the Program

David Ostrem's paintings are seductive and seemingly, at first glance, appear dense and a bit dumb. But on continued contemplation the elements of still life, landscape, the figurative, and text bounce off one another, creating new meanings and surprisingly complex insights which speak beyond the pop culture of their subject to the juxtaposition of elements and the nature of seeing. Ostrem's work can be read on many levels at once, each relationship creates a layer of meaning, allowing the viewer to see them as a contemplation of life or an exposition on visual meaning. Recently these elements all shed some light on the dilemmas of modern artists and the hermetic nature of the activity. The texts often give us the artist's thoughts, problems, theories, and predicaments and in doing so are insightful commentary on art making in this period. They are also an attempt, says Ostrem, of putting the whole gambit of art history in one work.
