About the Program

Valerie Romain's Weather sees the artist moving away from painting exclusively from life and questioning whether her direct experiences were as factual as she thought. She has spent much of her life feeling isolated by income, pigment, ethnicity, nationality, and mentality—even within her family's home. But family was always there—for entertainment, gossip, and infliction of mental anguish. Romain began looking at photo albums and realized that there were some relatives that she couldn't place and historical facts left undocumented, and she felt compelled to fill in the gaps on her own terms.
