About the Program

The works in Andrew Short's An Orgy of Pansemics focused on The Hardy Boys. The artist was an avid fan of the series as a young boy and found the garish and macabre covers—which were always more suggestive than the actual text within—to be appealing. Paintings and text worked to free the fictional characters from the narrative time warp in which they are trapped perpetually as seventeen and eighteen-year-olds. By using fictitious book covers and titles, the works chronicle their progression into adulthood and bring Frank and Joe Hardy into the 1990s. For the purposes of this show, they began aging from the late 1960s—making them in their mid 40s in 1995.
