About the Program

Cloud Water Monks is an exhibition of new paintings by Nhan Nguyen. The series of seven single paintings and a triptych represent a meld of figurative work and abstraction, as well as Western and Eastern mythologies and aesthetics. The paintings are overlays of figures, some taken from central Asian religious works, others with more Western influences. Cloud Water Monks represents a looser and more abstract style for the artist. The palette is subtler with muted tones of all but red and a refrained black line drawing that sets all the works in motion. The sets of figures sit uneasily over one another, each vying for the viewer's eye. The line changes from Chinese to Cocteau through a multitude of styles, forming a satisfying and cohesive whole.
