About the Program

Things We Look Up To, an installation by Vancouver artist Derek Simons, is a small shrine to everyday life. The various pieces in the show are constructions of wood, found objects, painting, and text. The work shows eclectic influences, ranging from Mary Kelly and Guido Molinari to Front 242. "I see myself as an anthropologist as much as an artist," says the Montreal expatriate. "I'm interested in the ritual and spiritual nature of our everyday activities. In this latest work, I have been particularly fascinated by the role of technology in our lives—how we both take it for granted and worship it."
