Nine Patch Irish Chain

About the Program

Pat Beaton's Nine Patch Irish Chain features the installation of a large, unmanageable, and impractical quilt. The work has been pieced together with fragments of experience, transferred onto the fabric of old bedsheets, creating what feels like a broad landscape. The expansive size of the quilt—over 18.5 feet and made from 744 square collagraph prints—works in a contradictory manner, with its fine details constantly drawing the viewer in. Images printed on the fabric move easily over this landscape, crossing the boundaries of the blocks which make up the Irish Chain pattern. The images in the work encompass her personal history and her recognition of the tradition of quilt makers who relate stories as a means of collecting stories and establishing a sense of community across generations.
