An Outside Influence

About the Program

Manitoba's Louis Gunnlaugson has worked a vast array of jobs including mining, farm work, construction and demolition, and on ships on the Great Lakes in his almost 70 years. Over the past few years, Louis has been making wooden sculptures that often hark back to these earlier experiences. Now retired and living on Commercial Drive, Louis fixes bicycles and makes his sculptures. These sculptures are plain and often awkward but possess certain strength of experience. They do not come out of any art tradition but rather make up a chronicle of his life. There is a simplicity in the work but moreover an attempt to get each detail exactly right. The horses and the fish are made from the memory of these animals, never from an illustration, and this is apparent when you see the work.
