Speaking Women

About the Program

Part of the Mayworks Festival and guest curated by Donna Hagerman, Zoe Lambert's Speaking Women draws upon her interest in accessibility and viewer involvement. The work is an intimate look into private situations of individual women in the form of a collaborative portrait. Each woman is an active participant in the piece, making decisions with Lambert about materials and content. Each piece consists of a photographic image of the woman on clear acetate overlaid with a text quote from that woman, a background of wallpaper, and framed with quilted fabric. Five of the earliest pieces travelled with Lambert in her job as a tree planter during the summer and fall of 1989. She exhibited them in camps, small community shops, pool halls, etc. throughout rural BC. The documentation, comment sheets, and text of her experiences in these communities is also exhibited. Speaking Women transcends political art for the converted. Lambert reaches out to the viewer and touches them with her heroic portraits of ordinary people. Individuals portrayed included Laurenza Maria Dumont, Elaine Fleming, Pam Fleming, Brenda Gaertner, Lisa Gentry, Donna Hagerman, Julie Hubar, Adele Johnston, Leslie Kenny, Mary Lambert, Jeane L. Manning, Teresa Marshall, Robert Mills, Juliet O'Keefe, Susan Prosser, Verity Rolfe, and Kathy Thompson.
