Estrangement

About the Program

The mixed media works in Gabriele Gottschlag's Estrangement focus on the continual devastation of our environment and the indifference displayed by both government and corporate powers towards that devastation. She is unabashedly reacting to this estrangement on an emotional level, allowing her anger and shame to energize her work. Gottschlag creates unique and intriguing surfaces with enough recognizable visual information to move the viewer to an understanding of the artist's concern. Content is important in her work but also relevant is the richness of texture. The materials used in this group of paintings are directly related to the issue. The conceptual levels in her paintings are conveyed in part by their non-conceptual features. The results are not always intended to be pleasing but rather express the harmful qualities inherent in the materials.
