About the Program

Violet and Catherine Costello's works aim to create a rich experience for the viewer by demanding the simultaneous involvement of both their visual and audio senses. Birds is their most recent work, an audio visual installation involving seven large, rather prehistoric and comic-looking birds constructed out of twigs, leaves, and other nest-building materials. Each bird is of a slightly different size and shape; each has its own personality. Viewed together however, these birds seem obviously related, as though they were perhaps members of the same family group. The birds stand around the centre of the gallery. At their feet, in a pool of popcorn and eggshells, lie their life-long friends, their soulmates—fifty-two brightly coloured fish. The sounds of the birds are reflected in a music, which is played in a continuous loop. Drum beats, repeated melodic patterns, and screeching violins create a sound that can be associated with the talking, singing, and movements of the birds.
