About the Program

The paintings in Joey Schwartzman's Viewerrrs are concerned with the concept of viewing and being viewed. The painted figures are viewing the viewer. The secondary concern is of sensuality and the erotic within the context of the voyeur or the looker. The framing or cutting out of some elements adds to the sensation. The paintings act as glimpses into a parallel reality or a rupture in time back to an earlier era. These frustrate the viewer by only allowing a fragment to appear, never letting the fuller picture open up and demanding distance for the viewer.
