book cover
legal / illegal focuses on actions by artists in which the boundaries between artistic staging and political action disappear, in which the symbolic leads to activism, illegality or even criminality. Actions that make clear the conflict between the systems of politics, art and life. The richly illustrated book accompanied the exhibition of the same name, which ran from October 16 to November 28, 2004 in the rooms of the New Society for Fine Arts (Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst) in Berlin. In addition to the exhibition, there were actions and interventions in the urban space of Berlin. The exhibition was then on view in Neuhausen/Fildern before moving to the Biennale in Venice. The starting point of the project is the investigation of artistic actions in their respective media and political context. Actions are presented and analyzed that arise in a framework in which there is formal freedom of art and expression, but which deliberately exceed the limits of legitimacy as provocation and scandal production in order to draw attention to political and social conditions or to question the art system itself. The book includes essays, texts by artists, documentary material and interviews. Actions by Franz Jung (kidnapping of Senator Schröder), George Maciunas (Fluxus movement) and Abbie Hoffman are discussed, for example. Other artists include: Antonio Riello, Terry Fox, Dennis Oppenheim, Chris Burden, Gregory Green, Tony Labat, Gianni Motti, and Mike Hentz. Many illustrations are published here for the first time and they were largely made available by the artists themselves. legal / illegal goes back to an idea by the Berlin performance artist Hans Winkler (artist group p.t.t.red), who put together the content of the book and exhibition.
