book cover
Decolonize Me is the multilingual catalogue that accompanies the nationally touring exhibition of the same name, first held at the Ottawa Art Gallery in 2011. Curated by Heather Igloliorte, and featuring Canadian artists Sonny Assu, Jordan Bennett, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Nigit’stil Norbert, Barry Pottle, and Bear Witness, the exhibition examines the complex explorations of colonization and self-determination. The catalogue contains essays by curator Igloliorte, Canadian critic Steve Loft, and Brenda L Croft, whose perspective on the Aboriginal experience in Australia pushes the critique beyond the national viewpoint, and engages with an international consideration of colonization. Also included are artist’s statements translated into their respective Indigenous languages, including Mi’kmaq, Cree, Gwich’in, Likwila and Inuttitut.
