Laura Vickerson: Trace
Laura Vickerson
1998
Catalogue of an exhibition at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery from October 18 to November 26, 1997. Trace, like many of Laura Vickerson's installations, addresses mortality and the ephemerality of human existence. Her work is marked by the use of fragile and unstable materials such as glass, flower petals, wax and, in this instance, light. In Trace, projections of light and shadow emanating from the artist's own environment are captured onto film and cast onto diaphanous layers of fabric suspended in the space. The viewer, a central player in this constructed drama, is made acutely aware of the inexorable passing of time as the projections slowly move around the curtained enclosure.
