Earthlings = ᓄᓇᕐᔪᐊᕐᒥ ᓄᓇᕐᑲᖅᑐᑦ = Terriens was published on the occasion of the exhibition Earthlings, curated by Shary Boyle in collaboration with Shauna Thompson, and presented at Esker Foundation, Calgary, January 21 to May 7, 2017. Earthlings featured ceramic sculptures and works on paper created individually and collaboratively by seven contemporary artists working from distinct cultural and geographical positions. Hailing from Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet, Kinngait/Cape Dorset, Qamani’tuaq/Baker Lake, and Toronto, the artists in Earthlings share an intuitive and labour-intensive approach to their work with materials and stories. Their sculptures and drawings merge animal and human, reality and myth, actual and imagined spaces. Artists include Roger Aksadjuak, Shuvinai Ashoona, Pierre Aupilardjuk, Shary Boyle, Jessie Kenalogak, John Kurok, and Leo Napayok, with texts by Shary Boyle, Heather Igloliorte, Naomi Potter, and Shauna Thompson. Earthlings toured to Doris McCarthy Gallery, Toronto from November 1, 2017 to January 27, 2018; Galerie de l’UQAM, Montreal from March 11 to April 14, 2018; and Nanaimo Art Gallery from August 2 to October 6, 2018.
