Creative Access Description

Black and white portrait oriented image of a Siksiká/Sioux/French woman with shoulder length dark coloured hair reading. She stands in a spotlight with her feet parallel and her back to the corner of the room and looks at the audience to the left of the frame. In her left hand she holds an open book at the bottom of its spine, her right hand hangs at her side. She is barefoot and wears a dark coloured pants, a satiny button up shirt with a ruffled collar, and a brown leather jacket with long fringe hanging from the arms and chest. To her right and behind her there is a folding chair covered with a piece of white fabric. To her left on the floor there is a circular hand drum leaning against the gallery wall. The wall to her right has a large projection of a historical photograph of Six Nations poet E. Pauline Johnson, filling the gallery wall floor to ceiling. Johnson, who is shot in profile with her left arm raised above her head and her fingers outstretched, wears her dark hair long and traditional Mohawk dress, a fringed leather dress with multiple beaded belts and necklaces. Below the projection and toward the bottom of the frame are the silhouettes of audience members' heads.
