Creative Access Description

A white ledger sized piece of paper in landscape orientation with a photocopy of a newspaper article in two parts filling the page. At the top left of the page is the newspaper title and date header, bold and enlarged article headline, byline and the first part of the article in five columns of standard serif font text. Set into the first two columns of text is a difficult to decipher image of an artist's work featured in the article. The image shows a portrait oriented rectangular work with abstract shapes, textures, and lines, as well as recognizable elements such as a pair of hands with fingers outstretched. Below the first part of the article is a clipping of the newspapers flag including the title, block capitalized in an old west/Wall Drug font, a graphic image of a snowy mountain, and the section heading for entertainment and television guide. The above elements fill the leftmost two thirds of the page. In the final third, the second part of the article is arranged with the jump headline in enlarged italic text and two columns of standard text below.

Description

Photocopied article from the January 13, 1988 edition of the Banff Crag & Canyon questioning understandings of 'art' and 'culture' based on creator and consumer identity. The author critiques and praises works by artist Jimmie Durham, Edward Poitras, Mike MacDonald, and Joane Cardinal-Schubert from the Re-Visions exhibiton at the Walter Phillips Gallery in Banff. Also discussed are the role of Indigenous voices in curating exhibitions of Indigenous artists, Indigenous presence working and researching in museums, and the limitations of culture packaged as 'art'.
