ArtistBiography
Jean-Jules Soucy was born in La Baie where he has always lived and worked. In 1976, he earned a bachelor's degree in visual arts teaching from the University of Quebec in Chicoutimi. He then presented his work both in Quebec and internationally. In 1993, he exhibited the Stressed Carpet installation at the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, made up of 60,000 liters of milk in folded cardboard boxes which had been the subject of a gigantic collection throughout the province. The work thus echoes the traditional motifs of the arrow sash. In 2000, he inaugurated the Pyramid of Ha! Ha! in La Baie composed of 3,000 reflective signage panels commemorating the Saguenay flood of 1996. In 2008, he received the Prix du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for visual and media arts. In 2021, his entire career was highlighted, in his native region, during the Ordre du Bleuet ceremony where he was made a member. His career has also been the subject of numerous documentaries and reports, notably the 1994 film directed by Bruno Carrière and produced by the National Film Board of Canada entitled L'art n'est point sans Soucy.Adapted from Centre Bang, 2023~root~>
