Biography

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Ann Decter moved to Toronto to study, and after sojourns elsewhere—New York City, rural Nova Scotia—settled into Toronto's vibrant women's writing and publishing community. She has a Bachelor of Arts in history and an Master of Education in philosophy and over a decade of experience in feminist publishing. Decter was co-managing editor at Women's Press from 1990-95—editing fiction, poetry, drama, and political theory. She has been a freelance editor, teacher of creative writing at George Brown College, and publisher at McGilligan Books—which she co-founded in 1994. Ann joined the Canadian Women’s Foundation in 2018 after a decade as Director of Policy and Advocacy at YWCA Canada, where she founded a women’s housing advocacy campaign that led to the commitment of 25% of Canada’s National Housing Strategy to programs and services for women and girls.
