Cynthia Low was born in a mining town operated by Australians in the state of Terengganu in West Malaysia. She lived there until she was eight, when her mother and siblings moved to the capital Kuala Lumpur. The family would spend their vacations with their father in Dungun, Low's hometown, which no longer exists. The family migrated to Canada on the eve of Low's thirteenth birthday. Now as a North American, Low has spent much time trying to grasp the texture, colour, and taste of her past.Adapted from Earthly Pleasures, 1994
