Biography

Josephine Fletcher was brought up on Hornby Island. She left for the Banff School at seventeen for summer school on a Tuition Scholarship. She then studied at Emily Carr College of Art in Vancouver for four years, receiving a diploma of Fine Arts. Josephine went on a ten day field trip to New York where she was so affected by seeing paint on canvas at the Museum of Modern Art that she was inspired to paint plein air on Hornby that summer. Josephine has painted in Montreal, Quebec City, off the coast of Tofino, Chile, Australia, and Europe. She has lived in the Haida Gwaii and now lives and works on Salt Spring Island.

"I have always been observing. I love the use of colour in its many varying sequences. It is a life time study. Working in the landscape is merely an excuse to be able to observe colour and form in a way that presents such nuances that are ongoing in fascinating me in their complexity. Thus my love of just colour in what is called field painting. I love light emanating from within and like to convey this through my work. I tend to only work with oils as they satisfy my need to put down a colour I desire and it does what I need. It also can surprise me with its possibility."
