Biography

Charity (they) is a plant scientist, botanical healer, activist, and interdisciplinary artist currently residing in Kjipuktuk (Halifax). Cruz’ practice is an intimate exploration of the philosophy of unlearning, and how its multifaceted nature can be unraveled with materialization through imagery, object, and song. Tuning into both cerebral, and bodily responses to sound and colour, Cruz sees how our vulnerabilities and subjectivity informs the process of creation. Their work delves into deconstructing their complex cultural and spiritual identity through themes of structural improvisation, with guidance from frameworks of restorative justice, abolition, anti-imperialism, and decolonial healing practices. These often manifest visually as acrylic and watercolour paintings, found sculptures, and sound performances.
